Key Design Features for a Solar-Ready Home
A properly designed solar-ready home begins with the roof. Ensuring that your roof meets the following criteria will make it easier to customize and install an optimal solar system tailored to your needs.
Ideal Roof Orientation and Slope
The roof should have an optimal azimuth that faces anywhere from due south (180°) to southwest or due west (270°). The most efficient orientation is 180°. For maximum solar absorption, the roof slope should range between 18 and 23 degrees.
Minimizing Roof Obstructions
To improve efficiency, choose a roof plane that is free of dormers, chimneys, vents, or other obstructions. Place elements like vents and chimneys on the north or east slopes whenever possible, leaving the designated solar roof plane unobstructed. Additionally, design the roof as rectangular as possible with ample space from side to side and from eave to ridge line. Avoid triangular shapes, as they are less effective for panel installation.
Placement and Accessibility
Whenever feasible, place the solar-ready roof on the back or sides of the home instead of the front. This consideration takes into account aesthetic preferences and HOA requirements. Underneath the roof, ensure the attic space allows easy movement for conduit installation and other electrical work.
Electrical Panel and Conduit Recommendations
For seamless solar system integration, your home’s electrical infrastructure must also be ready.
- Main Electrical Service Panel (MSP): A 200-amp buss bar with the main breaker at the top or bottom is critical. A more preferred option is a 225-amp buss bar with a 200-amp main disconnect, allowing up to 70 amps backfeed—ideal for systems up to 15kW.
- Pre-Run Conduit: Install conduit through the crawl space leading from the attic to the MSP. Proper conduit placement ensures less disruption during installation. Flexible elbows should be used to simplify wire pulling later.
Landscaping Considerations
Strategic landscaping prevents any shading issues on the roof’s solar-ready faces. Plan tree placement and growth carefully, ensuring they won’t obstruct sunlight from reaching the solar panels over time.

Conventional solar panels offer efficiency ranging from 15-20%, performing well under direct sunlight but losing effectiveness in low-light conditions. With Q.ANTUM DUO Z technology, Axia pushes efficiency to 20.6% while maintaining strong performance even during overcast weather or early mornings.
